Trainer of Terence Crawford takes gun to UK fist fight – What now?

Terence Crawford and Chris Eubank Jr’s trainer, Brian McIntyre, will remain in a UK prison for another month, having been charged with possessing a gun.

Essentially, McIntyre allegedly took a gun from the United States to a fist fight in the United Kingdom. The reasons for this remain unknown.

Whether McIntyre didn’t know or didn’t care about the strict gun laws in the UK is another matter and one for ‘Bomac’ himself to explain.

It’s no secret that Britain has one of the tightest gun laws in existence after being the victim of mass shootings in the past.

These horrific incidents, namely the 1987 Hungerford massacre and the 1989 Monkseaton shootings. Also, the 1996 Dunblane massacre, the 2010 Cumbria shootings, and the 2021 Plymouth shooting have shocked the nation.

Unlike America, the UK acted to ensure these incidents were kept to a bare minimum and chose lives over the right to bear arms.

In 2023 alone, America suffered 470 mass shootings from January 1 to September. It’s no surprise when automatic and semi-automatic weapons like AK 47 rifles are readily available over store counters similar to Sainsbury’s in the UK.

Most handguns have been banned in Great Britain since the 1996 Dunblane school massacre. However, any high-powered rifle comes under the strictest measures possible.

Even the UK police are not armed. The only force allowed to have a weapon is Northern Ireland.

McIntyre was arrested with the loaded gun in his luggage as he attempted to leave the UK following Eubank’s rematch victory over Liam Smith.

The pair worked well together and celebrated a superb revenge mission. Things only developed into today’s situation when McIntyre tried to leave the country.

Whether he had brought the gun with him from America is yet to be determined. However, UK border security may come under severe scrutiny if McIntyre somehow carried a gun from America on his way over.

Despite no details, it’s highly likely that ‘Bomac’ had the gun the entire time of his trip.

Once he serves out his month-plus in custody, McIntyre and his legal team can explain.

What sentence does Brian McIntyre face in the UK for gun possession?

New guidelines came into force in the UK that will affect McIntyre. Back in January 2021, eight new sentences were drawn up. McIntyre’s punishment could range from the low end to up to ten years.

Possession, purchase, or acquisition of a prohibited weapon or ammunition is up to ten years.

Possession, purchase, or acquisition of a firearm/ammunition/shotgun without a certificate is up to 7 years, depending on the type of weapon.

Also, possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person with previous convictions is five years.

Carrying a firearm in a public place is up to seven years, depending on the type of weapon.

Possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life faces a life sentence. Possession of a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence is ten years.

Use of a firearm or imitation firearm is a life sentence. Finally, the intent to manufacture or sell weapons in the UK is also a life sentence.

More will be determined about McIntyre’s fate at the October 9 hearing.
