Deontay Wilder brother plots boxing comeback despite knockouts

Marsellos Wilder, brother of heavyweight star Deontay Wilder, intends to continue his stop-start boxing career in the near future.

Despite losing three of five starts and being knocked out badly twice, the cruiserweight says he’s ready for another comeback.

The 34-year-old stepped into the game late when turning professional in May 2018. However, within four years, Wilder suffered three blemishes on his copybook.

Firstly, a shock loss to Willian Deets in early 2019 scuppered the chance to make his UK debut on the Chris Eubank Jr. vs James DeGale bill.

Secondly, a failed drug test for a non-steroidal drug saw a comeback win scratched from his record.

Deontay Wilder undercard

On his bigger sibling’s undercard in Las Vegas featuring on the Luis Ortiz bill was when it first came crashing down. Dustin Long landed a left-handed haymaker to lay Wilder flat on his back.

He went away, dusted himself down, and returned, only to lose again 28 months later.

A record of 5-3 is damaging in the sport of boxing. Simply being Deontay’s little brother may no longer be enough to prolong interest.

What everybody does love is a good Rocky story. Someone who is down getting back up to make it to the top.

Does Wilder possess those fundamental skills to be able to do that? – Athleticism alone is never enough.

Unlike his brother, Marsellos doesn’t have that concussive power. And with a questionable chin, it’s hard to see a glorious way forward.

Marsellos Wilder to make boxing return

Marsellos says: “I have some experience now, and I’m proud of myself.

“I will forever keep a chip on my shoulders knowing that I did and still doing something that 99% of people are afraid to do.

“I don’t blame them’ for what they don’t know. I’m thankful to God for forever-lasting abilities that my journey will continue.”

Carrying around a less-than-impressive record probably couldn’t have come at a better time for Wilder. A fighter can be called so simply by being a celebrity or a YouTuber.

Wilder is at least releasing music and trying to become a musician. This would undoubtedly put him in the celebrity boxer category.

There’s also a solid angle with Tommy Fury to consider. There’s already been three Fury vs Wilder’s in the heavyweight ranks. Adding another, albeit in the influencer category, would stir interest in the casuals.

However, Marsellos needs a win before considering Fury or a YouTuber. Therefore, it will be interesting to see what comes next for him.
