Deontay Wilder set for heavyweight title shot, WBC urged to act

Deontay Wilder is on high alert for a shot at his old championship crown, the soon-to-be vacant World Boxing Council heavyweight title.

World Boxing News understands the American will be offered an opportunity after Tyson Fury repeatedly stated that he’s done with boxing accomplishments.

Speaking to Queensberry, Fury added to another interview where he said unifying the belts holds no interest.

Fury said: “I’ve got new goals. I want to top the Forbes list of The Highest-Paid Athletes of the Year. I want to make a Hollywood movie.

“I’ve completed the game in the ring. It’s done. I’ve done everything there is to do and won every belt there is to win.”

“The Bronze Bomber” is number one in the rankings and enjoyed a Fight of the Year with Fury in 2021.

Deontay Wilder to gain from admission

Wilder now stands on the verge of being handed a crack at the vacant crown as Fury reiterates his decision to move on.

The WBC will be under significant pressure to act and strip “The Gypsy King” so the division can finally move on.

Earlier, Fury had told The Daily Mail similarly: “Nope, I am not interested in fighting Usyk [the other heavyweight champion]. He’s a little Ukrainian dosser. That’s all he is to me.

“No interest in unifying the division. It doesn’t mean s*** to me. All that stuff about unifying and whatever doesn’t mean anything to me.

“I am looking for the biggest payday. Most of the time, Usyk doesn’t cut it [with commanding big money].

“He’s just a foreign person who doesn’t speak good English, so you can’t sell him. I am looking for probably another American. Probably looking to fight Jon Jones [another UFC champion] in a boxing fight.”

On his desire to only make money from fighting and dismissing any further glory, Fury added: “Haters are going to hate. I am getting a bag. I am getting a big bag, too. So I won’t feel bad when I am cashing my cheque in.

“I won’t care when I am eating ice cream and marshmallows all day drinking Pina Coladas. I’m not thinking, ‘What about those boxers?'”

Fury’s admission that he only cares about cash will be a body blow to his fans, who previously heard their hero claiming that money wasn’t his motivation.

The boxer who stands to gain is Deontay Wilder, who will be given first refusal at his old green belt. Furthermore, the former ruler will be put forward against the next available opponent in the rankings.

Firstly, the WBC has to make its move.
