Viral Terence Crawford sees profile rise to Floyd Mayweather level

Terence Crawford’s victory over Errol Spence Jr. has skyrocketed the welterweight’s profile in line with that of boxing legend Floyd Mayweather.

World Boxing News researched Crawford’s social media and internet profile since the victory over Spence. The levels are that of Mayweather during his post-professional career.

Interest in Mayweather continues today, but maybe not to his old levels. But the fact Crawford is anywhere near that kind of vicinity is a testament to his triumph.

Terence Crawford is going viral like Floyd Mayweather

Crawford is the most searched welterweight on the planet and in the top five professional boxers worldwide, alongside Gervonta Davis, Deontay Wilder, Canelo Alvarez, and Mayweather.

At 40-0 with 31 KOs, Crawford is only ten wins from equaling Mayweather’s feat, which could be his next port of call. However, Mayweather will keep one eye over his shoulder, as Crawford is still five years off his 40th birthday.

According to Andre Ward, an ex-P4P king, Crawford has been the top name in the sport for some time. WBN believed he still needed that breakout fight, which he got with Spence.

“Terence Crawford is the best fighter on the planet,” stated Ward, as one of those who overlooked Crawford’s lack of resume pre-Spence. “He has been the best fighter on the planet for a long time now.”

Who will Crawford fight next?

Crawford discussed the top on Hot 97 on who he might face next. The name Jaron Ennis came up but seemed dwarfed by Jermell Charlo.

“Now, that [Ennis fight] could happen cause we at the same weight class. But you know, at this point, I’m looking for bigger and better opportunities, like [Jermell] Charlo.”

On seeing Ennis at his PPV event, Crawford added: “I gave him a little piece of mind [during the Spence fight]. We’ve been going back for some time.”

“I was in the moment. I just thought to tell him I’m coming for him too.”

WBN explained after a recent WBO ruling that Crawford could no longer become undisputed in three weight classes with just one more win. Charlo will lose his undisputed status if he chooses to face anyone but Tim Tszyu next.

The Australian mandatory challenger has waited his turn for over two years and will be champion on September 30 once the first bell goes on any Canelo Alvarez vs Charlo clash.

This leaves Crawford with two options at 154 to claim a world title. Either he faces Tyszu for the WBO version or waits for Charlo for the other three belts.

He could also pick a rematch with Spence, which currently has the most negligible commercial value.
