Anthony Joshua aired some eyebrow-raising views ahead of his clash with Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia on August 20.

AJ claimed the heavyweight boxing division was “whack” when he started as a professional in 2013.

The 32-year-old commented in Official Partner JD’s ‘Road to Redemption’ interview with Savage Dan. Joshua looked ahead to his rematch with Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk.

The former two-time heavyweight champion, who has gone on to fight 26 heavyweight bouts, said of the division: “Let me be honest, number one, when I came into this division, it was whack!

“I thought I was going to come in this game, take on anyone and everyone – it doesn’t matter who,” Joshua told JD Sports.

“I can only beat what’s in front of me, but I’ve got to ensure they’re top.”

Anthony Joshua bringing the belts back to Britain

The two-time world champion said he aimed to raise the profile of heavyweight boxing in Britain and “show that we are solid.”

He believes perceptions of the British are different in the US.

He added: “So, I’m going to bring the heavyweight division to Great Britain.

“I’m going to show that we are solid because I think people think that we drink tea, eat biscuits, and sit with the Queen.”

Robert Garcia – the new trainer

Joshua’s trainer Robert Garcia spoke for the first time as his new coach at the press conference announcement.

He said: “First of all, thank you all for being here. Thanks for having us.

“I want to congratulate Usyk and his team for all of the success they had. They’re great people and a great team.

“I started coming to the UK in December. I’ve been coming back and forth to England to work with Anthony.

“I see a different Anthony now; the way he thinks. The way he talks. Everything he’s practicing and everything he’s doing in the gym

“I think he fought the wrong fight, but that’s the past. That happened already.

Usyk – the better man

“Usyk was the better man, congratulations to him. But come August 20, we’ll do whatever it takes to win those titles back. I know he can do it.”
