The cross-codes fight of the century is almost upon us.

The Mayweather vs. Mcgregor fight will take place at the T-mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

As the war draws nearer by the day with anticipation of witnessing one of the most epics fights in history, let’s look at a timeline of Mayweather and McGregor’s history to build up the suspense.

2 July 2015

The Mayweather Vs. McGregor’s fight ‘ rumor’ started two years ago on the Conan O’Brien Show. While preparing for a fight with Chad Mendes, Connor McGregor was asked by the host if he fancied taking on one of the world’s greatest boxing icons, Floyd Mayweather. A high resounding “Duh!” was the response. Soon after, McGregor responded by saying no one would resist the chance to enter a fight where the reward was a cool $180 million.

4 January 2016

As a response to McGregor and somewhat expressing his own opinion, Mayweather mentioned one thing that can be attributed as the most important causal factor for the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight. Mayweather said the reason why boxer Andre Ward had not received much recognition in the media was because of his skin color. He went on to say that the success and fame enjoyed by McGregor and former UFC champion Ronda Rousey were based on the fact that they were light-skinned. Mayweather’s remarks prompted McGregor to respond, while at the same time viciously attacking the American boxer. The quest for the two to fight can arguably be attributed to Mayweather’s remarks on January 4, 2016.

6 May 2016

Tabloid newspaper, The Sun, reported that Mayweather and McGregor had agreed to a multimillion-dollar fight. Though this turned out to be false, UFC CEO, Dana White, refuted the reports saying “it’s just tabloid news.” The speed at which the news spread, no doubt, led the teams of these two fighters to make demands for a match seriously. Three days later, Mayweather and his team issued a statement saying a fight was “possible” between him and McGregor. On May 16, Mayweather mentioned he would only come out of retirement to fight McGregor. After four days, reports claim that Mayweather had offered McGregor $50 million for a potential bout. Next month, the two exchange ‘pleasantries’ on social media, thus further fuelling the rumors of a potential fight between the two.

30 November 2016

During this time, McGregor got licensed by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Soon after McGregor receives his clearance, bookies release odds for the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight, with Mayweather as highly favored. Subsequently, the whole of January 2017 saw Mayweather, McGregor, and Dana White make offers and counteroffers to fulfill the fight.

12 March 2017

On 12 March 2017, Mayweather officially announces he’s coming out of retirement. He further reiterates his position that he will only fight McGregor. On March 16, 2016, Dane White admitted that Mayweather and McGregor’s potential fight is possible for the first time. On May 16, 2017, Dana White revealed that negotiations are at an advanced stage between Mayweather and McGregor. Still, the proposed date for the fight, which was slated for 16 September 2017, has been set aside as it coincides with the highly anticipated GGG vs. Canelo Alvarez fight.

15 June 2017

This is the date that it all became official. The Nevada Athletic Commission approves the fight between Mayweather and McGregor and sets 26 August 2017 as the fight date. All parties confirm that they are part of the agreement and that the most lucrative fight in combat sports history will be on at the T-mobile Arena on August 26th.
