Chagaev v Oquendo II venue named: Sparkassen Arena in Kiel

Ruslan Chagaev’s WBA heavyweight title rematch opposite Fres Oquendo has a venue to go with the October 17 date revealed by WBN this week.

Chagaev and Oquendo will lock horns at the Sparkassen Arena in Keil and will be broadcast on Sat 1 in Germany.

The WBA heavyweight champion will once again face the Puerto Rican following a majority decision win in July of 2014.

Just prior to the original bout, Oquendo had some family problems that caused him to rethink making the trip to Russia, leading to Chagaev’s promoter offering ‘Fast Fres’ an improved deal to get on a plane in the days before.

Oquendo then gave a decent performance to push Chagaev all the way for the vacant WBA crown, although complained after the bout that the agreed contract wasn’t followed through.

The matter made it all the way to an American court, with the final ruling in favour of Oquendo meaning Chagaev was forced to agree to a rematch once his latest defence against Francesco Pianeta was done and dusted.

As Chagaev took just one round to blast out the German-based Italian, negotiations were struck up quickly to sort out the second fight and World Boxing News learned from those involved in talks that a deal has been done.

The winner of the encounter already has a mandatory obligation set by the World Boxing Association to face undefeated Australian puncher Lucas Browne next. ‘Big Daddy’ suffered a broken thumb in a warm-up fight earlier this month, but will be ready for his big shot which should happen in the first quarter of 2016.
