Maidana manager questions Broner’s desire to take the fight

In the immediate aftermath of Broner’s win over Malignaggi, a fight between Maidana and ‘The Problem’ was thought to be the natural next step, although Contursi is awaiting movement on talks as Golden Boy prepare to begin the groundwork on the contest.

“Nothing has changed regarding news on the fight at the moment,” Contursi told World Boxing News.

“As you know, Richard Schaefer and all Golden Boy Promotions people have been extremely busy with the Mayweather vs Canelo tour, but hopefully we’ll get in touch with them in the next few days.”

Maidana, 29, is patiently awaiting his chance to fight for the world title once again after taking out Josesito Lopez a month ago to seal his place as the number one contender to the WBA belt at 147lbs.

Fight fans have been licking their lips at the prospect of the encounter since witnessing 23 year-old Broner overthrow Paulie Malignaggi to become a three-weight world title holder and Contursi is sceptical of an agreement.

“I think Broner vs. Maidana is such an appealing fight and that it can sell very well. Therefore it is possible to happen this year,” he explained.

“Showtime want it, Golden Boy want it, Maidana wants it and the WBA have ordered it to happen so it really should happen this year.

“However, does Broner want it? That’s up to him and his team. All I can say is Maidana is in for that fight as the WBA mandatory challenger.”
