Conor Benn’s British Boxing license chances take haymaker blow

British welterweight Conor Benn’s chances of gaining a license to boxing in the United Kingdom have taken another massive blow.

Benn protested his innocence once again when a temporary suspension was lifted by the National Anti-Doping Panel as an investigation into his two failed tests continued.

However, the British Boxing Board of Control has now confirmed a decision to appeal the verdict. This clearly indicates that the BBBofC doesn’t believe Benn is utterly bereft of wrongdoing.

Releasing a statement on the matter, the BBBofC also added that the UK-Anti-Doping Agency has also launched similar action.

The news comes weeks into Benn and his promoter Eddie Hearn stating the NADP lifting of the temporary suspension meant only one thing – the fighter was innocent.

But judging by an unprecedented move by the top two safety measures in British boxing, both entities obviously don’t see it that way.

British Boxing Board of Control launch Conor Benn appeal

Explaining the decision, the BBBofC said: “The British Boxing Board of Control Limited [BBBoC] can confirm that it has filed an appeal in respect of the decision of the independent National Anti-Doping Panel in anti-doping proceedings brought by UKAD against Mr Benn.

“The BBBofC has an independent right to appeal the decision. As the governing body for professional boxing in the United Kingdom and having due regard to its role and responsibilities, has elected to do so.

“The BBBofC can also confirm that UKAD has also appealed.”

The said appeal shall be dealt with in accordance with the relevant rules. In accordance with those, the BBBofC is unable to comment further at this time.”

As always, Benn responded to what was always expected to happen. The undefeated puncher now says the BBBofC has an agenda against him.

“I’m disappointed at the news of an appeal being made, having already been cleared by both the WBC [they found no evidence either way] and the National Anti-Doping Panel to continue my career without any restriction.

“It was also disappointing to note that the media seemingly knew an appeal was being made [The BBBofC released a statement about the fact they are considering appealing] before me or my legal team and that there have been further breaches of confidentiality.

Conor Benn claims agenda against him

“There is clearly an agenda against me. We have seen that from the start of this process.

“As I have said before, I am innocent. Nothing has changed. I remain confident in my position. I will not be commenting further while I let the legal process play out.”

Why a top boxing authority would risk its reputation to go out of its lengths to deny one solitary boxer his right to compete, though, is anyone’s guess.

That’s the essential breakdown of this whole charade so far. It’s a boxer’s word against a boxing authorities’ word.

It’s already been confirmed that Benn did test positive twice. But it’s whether he knowingly did that, which the WBC cannot prove.

Therefore, they wouldn’t rule against Benn. The National Anti-Doping Panel is a separate issue. They obviously feel Benn should be allowed to box as the process plays out, provided he tests clean.

Sorry situation

It’s a sorry situation all around and one that the British Boxing Board of Control seems to be passionate about.

If Benn did dope, how can the BBBofC allow that fighter to compete unpunished? That’s essentially their side of it.

But if Benn didn’t know what was in his system, why should he lose any further part of his career?

With a deadlock between both sides apparent, it’s becoming increasingly more likely that Benn will decide to box on without the British Board’s approval.

The Middle East would be the obvious option, but who would Benn fight in that region? There aren’t too many names that would work for Saudi investors, possibly Manny Pacquiao, who is far too old and two years into retirement.

Benn has been out for sixteen months and will be 27 next month.
