Speaking to Sirius XM’s Boxing radio show, the current unified world champion had her say on the Briton’s attempts to make a massive undisputed heavyweight title clash this year.
Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn is rumored to have laid the deal on the table for Wilder to travel to the United Kingdom in the summer, something Shields believes is highly unfair.
“That’s bull-crap! There’s no way. They need to make the fight, whatever the numbers come out to, and split it 70-30, 60-40,” said Shields “However they want to do it. It just shouldn’t be $12.5 million when it’s going to make way more than that.
“Who knows how much Anthony Joshua’s gonna get paid and he’s just throwing out $12.5 million to Deontay Wilder.
“Regardless of if he has the fans or not, Deontay Wilder’s a world champion who’s been around a lot more than Anthony Joshua. Deontay Wilder has earned that right to be treated fairly and to be given a decent cut.
“What is $12.5 million if the whole fight revenue is $115-130 million. That’s crazy you only want to give him 12.5. That’s ridiculous. That’s a low blow.”
Without an agreement, Wilder would potentially face a year in the wilderness as Joshua has mandatory obligations with Alexander Povetkin and the IBF which will need addressing.
Even now, Povetkin has been ordered to challenge Joshua next and the current heavyweight king may need to ask the WBA for special permission should Wilder accept his advances.
At the Fights airs Mondays and Fridays from 6-8p ET on the first and only nationally-broadcast combat radio channel, SiriusXM RUSH 93, and is hosted by former New York State athletic commissioner Randy Gordon and former #1-ranked Heavyweight contender Gerry Cooney.
