Gennady Golovkin presented with WBN Fighter of the Year 2017 Award

Middleweight king Gennady Golovkin poses with his fourth World Boxing News Fighter of the Year Award after claiming victory in the voting over the holiday period.

The 35-year-old, who is currently preparing at Big Bear in California for his May 5th rematch with Canelo Alvarez, took time out of his schedule to receive the new trophy from promoter Tom Loeffler and trainer Abel Sanchez.

Golovkin enjoyed another stellar year to pick up the only WBN Award voted for by the fans, adding to previous successes in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

‘GGG’ has had a meteoric rise since blasting onto the world scene in 2010 with a third-round knockout of Nilson Tapia on home soil in Astana.

They represented the first-world title for Golovkin and the last time the proud Kazakhstani fought in his native country after being brought to America by an eagle-eyed Loeffler.

Boasting 20 victories and never having gone past eight rounds in his career, it was clear Golovkin had the promise to be a star, but the now-four-belt ruler has fought tooth and nail to reach the very summit of the sport.

Riding high as world boxing’s Pound for Pound king, Golovkin has built a solid fanbase in the US and has never been afraid to mix it with the best 160 pounders anyone has to offer.

Wins over Matthew Macklin, Daniel Geale, Martin Murray, and David Lemieux stood out as Golovkin won an unprecedented triple of WBN Fighter of the Year Awards.

Missing out to Vasyl Lomachenko last year, Golovkin returned with a vengeance in 2017, defeating Danny Jacobs before being held to a controversial draw with Canelo Alvarez.

Many thought Golovkin did enough to claim the spoils at the T-Mobile Arena last September, although the knockout artist has the chance to prove it all over again in a Cinco de Mayo blockbuster in less than two months.
