World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman has given Saul “Canelo” Alvarez his vote of confidence, following a test which found a tiny trace of Clenbuterol.
Canelo and his Team say this was due to him eating contaminated meat. The same previously happened to Erik Morales and Francisco Vargas.
Canelo has been tested many times during his career and this is the first ever adverse finding.
Mauricio Sulaiman said: ” I give the benefit of the doubt to Canelo. He has never previously tested positive for anything and he’s been in the Clean Boxing Program for many years.
“He has our absolute vote of confidence.”
The Nevada State Athletic Commission is assessing the test and will soon announce its decision. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and WBC middleweight Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin are due to fight a rematch.
It’ll be on May 5th at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The problem of contaminated meat in Mexico is not new. Clenbuterol is routinely used to make cattle and the meat they produce leaner. It’s commonplace and those that consume it will inevitably test positive.
The possible solutions are to test all meat before it’s consumed by boxers, for them to eat imported meat, or follow a vegetarian diet.
Mauricio Sulaiman says this issue MUST be attended: “One way or the other.”
