It’s the fight that seems too big not to happen as interests in Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor intensifies due to an admission by the former Pound for Pound king.
Speaking on ESPN’s First Take, Mayweather made a remarkable statement regarding on offer made to the Irishman.
“Conor McGregor keeps telling everybody he wants the fight. Let’s make it happen,” Mayweather said, even though the promoter was there largely to talk about the upcoming super-middleweight clash between star fighter Badou Jack and Briton James DeGale.
Mayweather went on: “We tried to make the McGregor fight. My number was a guaranteed $100million. We offered him $15m.
“We’re the A-side and I don’t know how much he has made but I’m pretty sure he hasn’t made $2m in an MMA bout.
“We can talk about splitting the PPV but we are the A-side. How can a guy talk about $20m or $30m if he’s not made eight or nine?”
Asked whether the fight would happen, the 39 year-old added: “Is the fight going to happen? We’re working on it.”
As it stands, McGregor has been involved in two massive PPV UFC events that sparked Mayweather’s interest on the back of a rematch with Manny Pacquiao being a non-starter.
‘MayPac’ secured over four million buys on HBO and Showtime, whilst the outcome of the bout means McGregor is now the main attraction for what would be a record-breaking 50th fight for Mayweather.
McGregor has made himself a huge worldwide star after modeling himself on Mayweather’s ‘Money’ persona, although few give ‘The Notorious’ a chance in a boxing match against the master.
