Golden Gloves and Star Boxing are hoping to put together what would be a fun fight between welterweight crowdpleasers Chris Algieri and Chris van Heerden.
SA promoter Rodney Berman recently met with US counterpart Joe De Guardia, both agreeing that the match had great potential.
Van Heerden has strong currency in the US based on his three-year stay on the West Coast, not to speak of a high-profile bout against Errol Spence. He recently returned to SA, scoring a stock-standard points win over Sacky Shikikutu.
Algieri, a former WBO junior-welterweight champion, is himself in the public eye thanks to big fights against Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Spence. He scored a career-best win two years ago, outboxing Ruslan Provodnikov to set himself up for major fights.
Said Berman: “I must say, the fight really intrigues me. Both are very skilled boxers and are at the stage of their careers where it’s make or break. It could be a fun fight between two very competent fighters.”
