Rumours Theophane could be in the running to oppose Ricky Burns in Glasgow this October have been shot down as the Scot mulls over a mandatory defense against Ricky Hatton-trained Relikh Kiryl.
Burns was given just a month to negotiate a title clash with Kiryl, leaving any attempts by Matchroom and Mayweather Promotions to make a fight with Theophane obsolete.
Should negotiations between Burns and Theophane be opened once this latest obligation is out of the way, ‘Treasure’ says he’s not interested in heading to Burns’ homeland for any contest.
“I have been told I will be approved if I want to fight Burns for the title and Mayweather Promotions wanted it on the upcoming Badou Jack v James DeGale card in Las Vegas,” Theophane exclusively told World Boxing News.
“I don’t know if or when it will happen but I have no interest in fighting in the UK. It will be a name opponent for me or I’ll fight another champion.
“My next fight will be in Las Vegas and Burns has his mandatory to fight,” he added.
Theophane, 35, last fought in April when missing out on the belt Burns now possesses against Adrien Broner but can make it 40 professional wins next time out against a foe yet to be named.
The headliner between Jack and DeGale has a tentative date in October pencilled in as the pair of super-middleweights prepare to unify the belts in the biggest 168 pound clash since Carl Froch v George Groves II.
