Haye: Khan as fast as Mayweather, Canelo win makes him an ATG

David Haye is adamant Amir Khan can give Canelo Alvarez plenty of problems on May 7 when the pair battle it out for the WBC middleweight title in Las Vegas.

The 35 year-old, a staunch supporter and friend of Khan, says the ex-super lightweight king is on par with Floyd Mayweather Jr in the speed stakes and can become one of the best fighters ever from the UK if he can pull off a shock against Canelo.

“Amir Khan is as fast, yes I said it! He is as fast as the ‘Money Man’ himself, Floyd Mayweather,” Haye said.

“I’ve said this all along. Go back to videos and you’ll see I’m not just saying it now because the fight is made, but I said the only person on the planet who can match Floyd for speed is our boy, Amir Khan. He’s the only one who can do it.

“With that being said, the only person to ever beat Canelo was a fast fighter and now we’ve got another fast fighter. It’s about strategy, speed and punch evasion.

“Mayweather’s feet were too fast and too sharp for Canelo and he wasn’t able to close that gap. But when he did, he didn’t know how to capitalize on it. He forgot to throw punches.

“Provided Khan doesn’t trade, or throw punches when Canelo is punching, he will have a massive chance to pull off one of the biggest upsets in British boxing history. Khan is going up two weights to fight he lineal middleweight champion. The Man who beat The Man and he’s not even a champion himself.

“If he can pull it off, and it’s a big if, Amir Khan should be recognised as one of the all-time greats. I truly believe he can and people will talk about this fight for a long time to come,” added Haye.
