The pair had been in talks to meet on May 2 for the WBC middleweight title currently in Cotto’s possession, although De La Hoya’s deadline for an agreement was not met and Canelo will now move on.
De La Hoya wouldn’t discuss names when asked who Canelo may now face instead, but did say that the Mexican will still fight an opponent on the original date of May 2.
Rumours are already circulating that Cotto is awaiting the outcome of Floyd Mayweather v Manny Pacquiao mega-fight negotiations before showing his hand and committing to any contest.
