Fres Oquendo on the plane to Russia for WBA title shot (photo)

Several reports surfaced during Friday that Oquendo would be relinquishing his opportunity to fight for a world title for the third time in his career, although that is obviously not the case.

Sending a photo to WBN as he left the US bound for Grozny, Oquendo is ready, willing and able to face former WBA champion Chagaev and take his place in the opposite corner at the Ahmat Arena.

This latest news comes of the back of WBA Vice President Gilberto Mendoza confirming that the organisation were not aware of any changes to the bout and also means Shannon Briggs potentially filling in for Oquendo is off the table.

Briggs had claimed that he had agreed terms to substitute against Chagaev, but will now have to wait his turn as Oquendo takes his chance.

Oquendo, 41, spoke of his determination to finally fulfill his dream of winning a version of the heavyweight championship to WBN earlier this week and aims to bring the title back to him home to Chicago.
