Talented welterweight Frankie Gavin added the Commonwealth title to his British belt after impressively stopping previously undefeated Denton Vassell at Liverpool Olympia.

The 27-year-old from Birmingham was willing to trade with Vassell when needed, producing a cracking shot in the seventh to seal another accolade and improve his tally to 16 wins without a defeat.

Vassell, 28 and from Manchester, dropped the first loss in his 21st professional contest on the night at the famous venue but can come again after another spirited display that saw Gavin under pressure in the fifth.

In the chief support, Ellsmere Port’s Paul Butler successfully defended his Commonwealth super-flyweight title.

He halted late replacement Najah Ali in four rounds to move his record to 12-0.

Butler is on course to land a world title shot in the coming months.
