That honor still falls with Mayweather’s fight against Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao from May of 2015 and the American remains outsider with the online boxing betting experts to make any return to the ring.
It’s safe to say the vast majority of those involved in the sport see Mayweather’s future away from the sport, although at a recent event, ‘Money’ took offense to being asked about avoiding a fight with Gennady Golovkin.
‘GGG’ is the new superstar of boxing following the retirement of Andre Ward, cementing his place as the number one with what looked to be a nailed-on points win over Canelo Alvarez last month. Not so, according to the judges, who carded a debated draw to set-up a potential rematch in May 2018.
So what price Mayweather coming out of his self-imposed exile again to fight the winner in September next year, possibly long odds for those keen on a wager, even more so if you take the weight factor into account.
Mayweather is comfortable walking around at 150 pounds – so making welterweight suits him down to a tee, and heading up to a career-highest weight of 160 may be of no interest whatsoever for the five-weight title holder.
Without GGG or a return with Canelo at the higher poundage, who else could entice Floyd back?
The likes of Amir Khan, Keith Thurman or Errol Spence Jr. lead the pack, although don’t possess the pulling power a Golovkin or a McGregor, which means fans may have seen the last of Mayweather following a perfect 50-0 record and two decades trading blows.
