Broner loses title on scales, Theophane hits 140 limit

‘The Problem’ faces Briton Ashley Theophane at the DC Armory in Washington DC this Friday but is no longer the champion after refusing to lose the weight.

Theophane to his credit scaled right on the button ahead of his first ever world title fight as Broner couldn’t make it – even in the nude.

World Boxing Association rules states Theophane will be allowed to claim the now vacant belt, although a Broner victory would see the title remain without an owner.

Broner is an overwhelming favorite to win the bout, whilst ex-British title holder Theophane has scrapped his way to the brink of a recognised strap after linking up with Floyd Mayweather Jr’s promotional outfit.

The next two fighters in the current WBA rankings are Michele Di Rocco and Mauricio Herrera, both of whom have bouts coming up.

Di Rocco is scheduled to meet Ricky Burns for the vacant ‘regular’ belt meaning the ‘super’ championship will just fade into the background unless Theophane pulls off a shock.

On the undercard, Robert Easter Jr weighed 133 pounds for his lightweight tussle with Algenis Mendez as the Dominican scaled 134.2.

In a further bout in the bill, Anthony Peterson came in at 137.8 pounds, whilst Samuel Neequaye was 138.6.
