Garcia comes on strong to out-point Guerrero, Vasquez stops Martinez

The 27 year-old became a two-weight world title holder by outsmarting the older and more experienced Guerrero, 32, who was too reliant on catching Garcia with one big punch that could potentially be a game changer.

Guerrero started brightly at the Staples Center and took three out of the first four rounds, although once Garcia settled into the fight, ‘Swift’ took control down the stretch to see out what in the end was a comfortable points win. Judges at ringside handed Garcia another green belt to add to his collection with scores of 116-112 across the board on a night when controversy took a back seat to sheer guts shown by both fighters.

Garcia can now boast an impressive 32-0 record as he begins a second reign as champion, whilst ‘The Ghost’ Guerrero drops to 33-4-1, having lost three of his last five bouts to further deepen his career crisis.

In the co-feature, Sammy Vasquez completely dominated Aron Martinez for six rounds before his opponent retired on his stool. Vasquez improves to 21-0 and moves on to a WBC number two eliminator, whilst Martinez is now 20-5-1.
