The talented Bahamian is biding his time as the mandatory challenger to WBA, IBF and IBO champion Golovkin who is currently seeking to unify the division further by facing WBO title holder Billy Joe Saunders.
Golovkin’s team have made a significant offer to face Saunders in the spring, although Johnson knows that he is first in line should a four-belt contest between the two divisional rulers fall through.
“Although I cannot comment on whether there are any talks with GGG, I can say his team is a well-organized team, as is my team Golden Boys Promotion and we do everything in respect to the fighters and fans,” Johnson exclusively told World Boxing News.
“As of right now, there’s no need to challenge Golovkin for a shot at the world title anymore because I am the number one contender. I just need to wait for my chance.
“But saying that GGG isn’t the only fight I’m seeking, even though he is the one that I am focusing on at this moment. The likes of Canelo Alvarez, even Saunders himself and Daniel Jacobs are in my sights, but I can also move up to super middleweight where I know that I can be a force and a champion.”
Johnson, 31, has big ambitions to face the best at 160 or 168 after working his way to the top at a steady pace and is confident that it’s just a matter of time before the Golovkin fight comes to him.
“I have done my fair share of work just as many of the past and present champions have,” he said.
“I do not take a delight in just challenging a champion for a world title shot though as I see no gain in it. I want to fight the best and beat the best in my division as that is my passion. I’ve worked hard to get where I am today along with the help of my family, friends, my team, the fans of my country, around the world and most definitely God.
“I was given a test to fight in an eliminator and that test I have passed. I am the mandatory challenger and I know It will happen sooner or later,” added Johnson.
