Juan Manuel Marquez plans to fight in October or November, provided kneecap holds up

The 41 year-old has been out of action since his decisive win over Mike Alvarado in May 2014 and has been constantly linked to retirement due to the current state of his aging body. Marquez is receiving treatment for his ailments though and says he could return this fall if he is giving the all clear to fight soon.

“The right kneecap isn’t in the proper place and I’m in rehab to treat it,” Marquez explained.

“My doctor advises me that surgery isn’t necessary. It’s a question of rehabilitation carefully and constantly following the program of exercises so the knee responds properly. I’m setting myself a time of one and a half to two months, but I’m confident that I’ll be able to tell how I’m progressing as I do more and more sparring.

“I still have the hunger, I still possess the ambition and I still have the fire. First and foremost I’m a fighter with the heart and the mentality of a fighter. I want that fifth Championship. For me hunger for success is the most telling factor.

“So firstly I need to recover, second find a rival and then war! If everything goes well, I’m planning to fight again in October or November,” he added.

‘Dinamita’ is still riding the crest of a wave following his knockout of Manny Pacquiao is 2012 despite losing to Timothy Bradley in his very next outing. Rematches with both Pacquiao and Bradley are said to be possible following a warm-up fight, but only if Marquez can prove he is 100% fit.
