The 34 year-old, who has won his last four on the spin, participates in his 45th professional contest on the night and has been pushing himself in the Mayweather Gym in order to be in the best shape to battle the former fringe WBC title challenger.
“Preparations have gone great. I started camp sparring with Mickey Bey, Zab Judah, Ishe Smith and Demarcus Corley, whilst Nate Jones has been doing a great job and everything has gone to plan,” Theophane told World Boxing News.
“Montes has a record of 30 wins and 4 loses, 21 of which have come by knockout, so he’s a formidable opponent. Regardless of that though, I jumped at the chance to fight him. He’s a tough Mexican, but three of my last five opponents have from there and I love fighting them. They are true warriors and very rarely do they take a backward step, so I have to be at my best.”
Theophane’s winning streak stretches back to a split decision points defeat to Pablo Cesar Cano, which in turn came following a brief stint at 147lbs. ‘The Treasure’ is fully focused on continuing his run at super lightweight though – which he says doesn’t include a revenge mission against Cano but what he hopes will end with a shot at one of the world title holders at 140lbs.
“First and foremost I’m a 140lb fighter so any title shot will be at that weight,” confirmed Theophane. “Floyd has managed to get Mickey Bey, Ishe Smith and now Badou Jack world title shots, so I believe it’s only a matter of time before I get mine.
“Floyd has given me some promising words of late so I just need to keep doing what I’m doing. One thing I don’t do though is rematches. There is no need for me to face Cano again unless it was for a world title,” he added.
Former IBF super welterweight champion and stablemate Smith is also set to appear on the Nevada bill.
