The 26 year-old flyweight pushed his record to 13-0 by defeating the experienced Valery Yanchy at the Echo Arena on October 25 to emulate what former WBC title holder ‘Hoko’ achieved a generation ago.
Ambitious Satchell, who is notorious for being one of the hardest trainers in the sport, is obviously delighted to have secured such a prestigious title, but predictably still found room for improvement.
“I’m happy with my overall performance as I feel I executed the tactics we set in place nicely, however there is a few things I need to work on to avoid taking silly shots,” Satchell told World Boxing News.
“It still hasn’t sunk in properly that I am European champion though and It’s an amazing feeling. I’m so happy I have made history by doing so.”
‘Satch’ has been consistently tipped for bigger things since breaking onto the UK scene in 2012 by defeated Paul Edwards for the Commonwealth belt, with a move up to 115lbs to face North-West rival Paul Butler a major talking point.
The fighter himself is not getting too carried away by any talk of world titles at the moment despite his success and revealed to WBN that his main focus is to establish himself as the best on the Continent before the inevitable championship chance comes to fruition.
“I think the plan is to defend the European title and then take it from there,” said Satchell. “I don’t think I’m at world title level just yet and I don’t want to rush things.
“I do think I’ve proved that I’m a serious threat though as I’ve not had an easy title fight yet and I’ve boxed really top lads. Whatever type of opponent I come against, myself and my team always have the best tactics in place to get past them.
“Once we do go for a world title, my team and I have had our eye on Juan Carlos Reveco from Argentina for the WBA belt. There is also a fight with Paul Butler to consider when he wins a world title and I think it would be an interesting fight for the fans.
“Right now I am just enjoying being European champion as It’s been great since beating Yanchy. Everyone is made up for me as they are all enjoyed the fight and the whole show put on by Frank Warren,” he added.
