Sanchez: Golovkin v Chavez Jr. being discussed for July 12 in LA

Rumours have been rife that the two talented fighters could be set for a big showdown at some point this year and Golovkin’s coach Sanchez has confirmed that it is clash they would relish.

“We would love a fight between Gennady and Chavez Jr,” Sanchez told World Boxing News.

“I think the style match-up would be perfect and it’s a great TV fight.

“If it’s done, It will be at The Forum in LA and it would follow in the tradition of memorable events at a great boxing venue.

“I really hope an agreement can come to terms for this fight to happen on July 12.”

Golovkin, 31, is widely recognised at the most fearsome 160lber on the planet after putting together 29 straight victories and demolishing some decent names in compiling 26 stoppages.

The Kazakh, who holds the WBA and IBO titles, was due out on April 26 this year on HBO, although the death of his father has meant that ‘GGG’ decided to take some time out and rightly put boxing in the shadows whilst his family grieve.

Potential opponent Chavez, himself a former WBC belt holder at the weight, has recently been campaigning at 168lbs and higher for his two victories over Bryan Vera and it is highly debatable that the 28 year-old could once again get down to the middleweight limit.

A catch-weight could possibly be on the cards, although there has been talk of Golovkin fighting at super-middleweight in the past, and a final eliminator for the WBC title held by Sakio Bika ay 168 is also an option.

If the contest comes off, it would certainly be a mouth-watering prospect as Golovkin would face the toughest test of his reputation so far and would be almost certainly heading out of his middleweight comfort zone in the process.

For Chavez Jr, it would be a chance for redemption on the back of suffering his first defeat to Sergio Martinez in 2012 as being tight at the weight was a contributing factor in his eleven round no show at the Thomas and Mack Center.

This is one speculated encounter that I hope can make it to the contract signing stage.
