The 20-year-old super-middleweight, who impressed on the Gold Coast over the spring, signed terms with Eddie Hearn as he embarks on a career without the GB vest.

Also joining forces with a new management team with Charlie Sims at Wasserman, Docherty is training under the watchful eye of respected coach Tony Sims.

Docherty will now feature on the Sky Sports bill topped by Lewis Ritson’s European lightweight title challenge against Francesco Patera in the North East.

Speaking to WBN about his move, Docherty was highly excited to have everything in place for his pro run.

“I’m looking forward to a new journey in the pro ranks. I’ve had some great achievements at amateur level competing in the best tournaments around the world, which will only help me in the future,” Docherty exclusively told World Boxing News.

“I believe my style will suit the paid ranks, and I’m coming to make a statement beginning on October 13th, Newcastle.

“I’m learning loads with my new trainer Tony Sims, which is something I always wanted to do at the Matchroom Gym.

“Now that I have a great team behind me, I can’t wait to show the world what I can do and continue to bring big boxing nights to Scotland,” he added.

Manager Sims said: “John proved his class in the amateurs, and I have no doubts about him making a successful transition to the pro ranks.

“John has the talent to go right to the top of the sport and has the right platform to showcase his skills to the world on Sky Sports.”

The former European Youth silver medallist will share the Metro Arena card with Dave Allen, Olympic bronze medallist Josh Buatsi, and a host of stablemates from Matchroom Boxing.
