Roach still hopeful of Mayweather choosing Pacquiao rematch
Trainer Freddie Roach is keeping his fingers crossed a good performance by Manny Pacquiao over Jeff Horn can lead to a second bite of the Floyd Mayweather cherry.
As Mayweather eyes a return to action in September against Conor McGregor, Roach believes a crushing defence of his welterweight title could potentially give Pacquiao the fight he wants most.
The original ‘MayPac’ in 2015 generated the most money of all the fights in history when Mayweather defeated the Filipino at the MGM Grand, although fans weren’t happy at the quality of the match-up.
Pacquiao also cited an injury suffered prior to the contest and Roach wants his man to prove he’s back to his best against Jeff Horn this summer to show Mayweather a return is worth his while.
“I do believe we can knock this guy (Horn) out. We have the tools to do that,” said Roach this week.
“I think Manny will have to look good in this fight to get to Mayweather, because if Mayweather is deciding whom he’d fight next I’d like that to be us.”
On reports Pacquiao isn’t looking too good in training, Roach added: “I’m looking (for Manny) to please all the fans and the way to do that is score a knockout.
“If he has lost the killer’s instinct, I’d like that to come back,” he added.
Mayweather v Pacquiao took over seven years to come to fruition and failed to live up to the hype, meaning any attempts to pit the two legends together again could be met with strong opposition.
