World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman is suggesting a tournament of top middleweights to find a challenger for WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, extending an invitation to the world Boxing Association and the International Boxing Federation.
Mauricio said:”I think this would be very interesting to discuss with the WBA and the IBF, as we are trying to come up with a procedure to find the next mandatory challenger. This is only an idea and a proposal. We don’t know the status of the other two organizations.”
Concerning the possibility of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fighting Gennady Golovkin somewhere in time, Mauricio said:”I’m sure they will fight eventually. It’s a fight which represents the best of Boxing today. I hope they come to am agreement.”
As for Canelo’s decision Mauricio said: “I’m not in a position to judge anyone. I respect his decision and his promoter’s decision.”
