Floyd Mayweather Jr. has thrown open a poll to decide who he shares the ring with next as a decision on who he faces on May 3 in Las Vegas draws closer.
The pound for pound king has seemingly put a spanner in the works of reports suggesting Amir Khan was a certainty to land the fight by offering the fans Marcos Maidana as an alternative.
The 36 year-old hasn’t stipulated a time limit on the voting, but it is not expected to be a lengthy period as Mayweather was due to announce his next foe at the end of last month.
This news comes as a hammer blow to Khan, who had stated that his portion of a deal to oppose Mayweather was done, although early votes on Twitter have shaded it for the Briton.
Whomever is the chosen fighter, they can expect to earn a career best cheque in the spring as Mayweather puts the power into the hands of the people.
A WBA and WBC unification now becomes a possibility after Maidana inflicted a first defeat on Mayweather’s friend Adrien Broner last time out to claim the title and was in talks to rematch ‘The Problem’ around the same time.
Mayweather may well put an end to Broner’s chances of immediate revenge as a clash against the best in the world would far out-weigh a return against a fighter he just beat for Maidana.
Reports that a 10.4 million dollar bet on Denver to win the Super Bowl were also denied for a second time by ‘Money’ as The Broncos went down 43-8 in the NFL showpiece on Sunday.
