Anthony Mundine to fight Carson Jones on January 29

Mundine, 38, had named a target list including the likes of Floyd Mayweather after defeating fighting legend Shane Mosley in November, but has plucked out Jones for what on paper seems to be a stay-busy fight.

‘The Man’ has struggled to nail down the top opponents he craves as his career winds down and is seemingly aiming to stay sharp in the hope that the call for a massive fight in the US one day comes to fruition.

The choice of Jones does seem to be an eyebrow-raiser though, with multi-weight title holder Mundine set to go into the contest as a heavy favourite with the bookies, but could be on a hiding to nothing if the Aussie doesn’t come through with flying colours.

American Jones, who has ten losses from 48 bouts in a busy career, has proved before that if underestimated he can be a handful, which was none more evident than in his first fight against Briton Kell Brook.

At 154lbs though, the tough 27 year-old remains largely untested.
