‘The Tijuana Tornado’ seemed to be stopped on his stool after the seventh round of his contest with Jones due to another cut to his injury-prone eye, although amazingly, a punch landed earlier in the fight by his American foe was wrongly ruled a headbutt just one round previously.
Margarito then went on to secure a techinal decision in further atonishment as Jones also looked to have done enough pressing to claim a points win.
A furious Jones told WBN in the aftermath he believed he deserved a rematch and Margarito should not move on to a possible trilogy with Miguel Cotto on December 2.
“I honestly don’t think he will get a third Cotto fight and I hope he doesn’t,” Jones exclusively told World Boxing News at the time.
“You only have to look at our fight to know he doesn’t deserve it because he didn’t rightfully beat me. Even if people want to argue that he did get the decision against me, there’s no way he could beat Cotto anyway.
“If he wants to risk his heath that’s his choice, but I just think he shouldn’t be allowed to fight anyone from now on until I get my justice.”
The WBO’s decision to rate Margarito on the back of this hollow win over Jones has led to immediate rumors of Cotto negotiations as a top 15 place would be need in order to secure the fight for the Puerto Rican’s world championship.
Cotto is contemplating making his next outing his final bow, and scoring a rubber match win over his fiercest rival following THAT first loss and belated revenge, could be the perfect way for the multi-weight world title holder to hang up his gloves.
It’s unlikely Carson Jones will feel the same way.
