The 31 year-old hit the canvas on more than one occasion during the Birmingham derby at the Barclaycard Arena in what was a thrilling fight from start to finish. Eggington had the edge in power though and that ultimately told in the second half of the contest.
Gavin, who has been accused in the past of not living the boxer’s life, had already failed weight the previous day and looked shattered by the eighth round when an onslaught by Eggington forced referee Victor Loughlin to step in.
In other news from the bill, Kal Yafai landed his dream shot at the super-flyweight with a routine win over Johnson Tellez. The 27 year-old made it to 20- by halting the Nicaraguan in the third round.
Yafai will now meet hardened Panamanian Luis Concepcion in Manchester on December 10 as part of Anthony Joshua’s next heavyweight title defence.
Middleweight Anthony Ogogo lost out to Craig Cunningham leaving his plans to fight for the British title in tatters. Previously undefeated Ogogo, 27, complained to his corner of blurred vision and was pulled out of the fight during the eighth round.
At super-bantamweight, Sean Davis out-pointed Paul Economides in a closely fought encounter, whilst there were victories on the bill for Lennox Clarke, Don Broadhurst, Andy Keates and former world title challenger Brian Rose.
