Fight updates: Beterbiev v Maderna; Lomachenko v Martinez

The undefeated 31 year-old, who has defeated all nine of his opponents via stoppage, was on the verge of a world title shot against Sergey Kovalev recently until Beterbiev delayed negotiations due to injury.

The ex-amateur star now faces a long wait for his world title chance due to Kovalev fighting American rival Andre Ward in a blockbuster clash later this year.

Promoter Yvon Michel released details of Beterbiev’s outing with Maderna on Friday, therefore ruling out the potential for a summer fight with Kovalev in Moscow.

Beterbiev may decide to take an alternative route to the world title, although the only other options on offer are encounters with either WBA ‘regular’ champion Juergen Braehmer or WBC title holder Adonis Stevenson.

In other news, WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko is set to defend his title against three-time belt holder Roman ‘Rocky’ Martinez.

The bout is slated to take place on June 11 at Madison Square Garden in New York City but comes with a complaint from mandatory challenger Miguel Berchelt.

Mexican Berchelt, who holds the interim title, was due to fight Martinez recently until the Puerto Rican pulled out through injury and has lodged a complaint with the WBO in an attempt to stop the contest going ahead.
