Savannah Marshall loses WBC title status after long-term injury

The World Boxing Council has moved to declare the women’s WBC middleweight title vacant following the Britsh fighter’s long-term injury.

Marshall, who took a clutch of titles from Franchon Crews-Dezurn, is ruled out of action until next spring. She was looking to compete in the Professional Fighters League after signing a deal to join old rival Claressa Shields.

There’s no real guarantee that Marshall will accept a crack at the WBC belt once she’s fully fit. However, the WBC will afford her the opportunity after confirming a ruling.

“Former WBC Super Middleweight Champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn was scheduled to make her mandatory defense against mandatory contender Shadasia Green earlier this year.

“The WBC approved Franchon Crews-Dezurn vs Savannah Marshall with the condition that the winner would have to make the mandatory defense immediately next.

Savannah Marshall injury

“Savannah Marshall defeated Crews-Dezurn and unfortunately sustained an injury which will keep her outside of the ring at least until April 2024.

“The WBC Board of Governors has decided to place Savanah Marshall as Champion in Recess. The WBC will order a fight for the vacant Super Middleweight world title between Green and an opponent to be designated by The WBC Women’s Championship Committee.

“We wish Savannah Marshall a prompt and successful recovery,” stated the WBC.

Marshall is more likely to pursue another battle with Shields than return for a championship she already won. Shields represents the highest profile event available to Marshall.

The pair enjoyed a massive collision in the United Kingdom. Shields came out on top and became undisputed herself. Marshall had beaten Shields previously in the amateurs.

A trilogy would spark interest, especially if it takes place inside a cage, where both women have trained to transition in the past.

Shields lost an MMA fight and is more experienced than Marshall.
