Mayweather vs McGregor: The chances of an upset

Conor McGregor’s trash-talking and harrying of Floyd Mayweather finally paid off when it was announced that the duo would get into the ring.

Undefeated Mayweather will take on Ireland’s mixed martial arts star at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada on August 26.

The publicity tour will surely whip up unprecedented interest in one of the richest fights in history.

Even though ‘Pretty Boy turned 40 and ‘retired’ in September 2015 after his last fight, many in the sport feel it will be a miss-match and bad for boxing.

The American is far too ring-savvy to be drawn into a brawl with the Dubliner.

McGregor does not see it that way. He will no doubt be in his opponent’s face during the impending roadshow to promote the fight. However, we know he can ‘talk the talk,’ can he ‘walk the walk’?

There is no doubting his pedigree in MMA and UFC. He has just three losses in an eight-year career beginning in 2008. McGregor’s last outing was a TKO triumph over Eddie Alvarez in November 2016.

Things will be a lot tougher next time he enters the ring. The hope is that it will be a decent spectacle for the thousands of fans in the arena and millions watching worldwide.

The trouble for McGregor is that he will be taking on a man who does not know how to lose. Despite his wealth and celebrity status, he has always done business when it mattered most.

The Irishman will hope to prey on the fact he is ring rusty and no spring chicken. However, Mayweather would not have agreed to the fight unless he felt he could win.

He has an undefeated record to protect and will not want that to be tarnished in what will probably be his final fight.

Publicity stunt

McGregor’s boxing technique has been questioned. Those who feel that the bout is no more than a money-making publicity stunt will delight in a comprehensive victory for the American.

Still, there are reports that he is a more competent boxer than people credit him.

The difficulty for the 28-year-old will be to land a blow on ‘Money.’ Mayweather built his career on hitting and not being hit, taking the art of defensive boxing to a new level.

‘The Notorious’ will be unable to outbox a man who has won 49 fights and has never been beaten. So, he must look for a knockout to win the Mayweather vs McGregor fight.

Mayweather knows this. As always, his game plan will be to frustrate and pick off his opponent with jabs and look for an opening that will probably be there.

Every fighter has a ‘puncher’s chance,’ McGregor’s physical prowess and aggressive nature will stand him in good stead, but it would seem folly to suggest that he can get the better of one of the sport’s legends.
