Exclusive: Keith Thurman favours Danny Garica clash over Kell Brook

The undefeated 27 year-old puts his coveted belt on the line against former amateur team-mate and sparring partner ‘Showtime’ Shawn Porter on March 12 in a contest that is already being billed as a Fight of the Year contender.

In a recent interview with WBN, Thurman outlined that his sole focus is on Porter and Porter only, but when quizzed on fighting IBF champion Kell Brook or compatriot Garcia in a high-profile unification clash, the Florida native opted for the latter.

“The biggest fight that I’m faced with right now is Shawn Porter. But if we get through Shawn Porter the way me and my team want to achieve this victory, from here, the biggest fight I believe is a Danny Garcia fight,” Thurman exclusively told World Boxing News.

“Kell Brook is an amazing fighter, but the fight is not the same as in America, so the biggest fight for me and the American fight fans right now is Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman versus Danny Garcia.

“Not only is it a tremendously big fight, but the winner of the fight gets to hold two titles at 147.

“I have stated many times, on many occasions, that I want every belt in the welterweight division as I want to be the undisputed champion of the world. That has been a dream of mine since I was a young child and that’s where we are headed.”

Thurman has been highly impressive in his rise to the top of the 147 weight class and can boast an 80% KO ratio alongside his fearsome reputation as a stern test for anyone in his division.

The likes of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao steered clear of Thurman when picking their most recent opponents and there is no doubting that ex-world title holder Porter has his hands full next month.

This latest admission from the highly-rated champion will be a dent to the hopes of UK star Brook, who has both Thurman and Garcia on his 2016 wishlist. ‘The Special One’ aims to make up for his failed attempt to lure Amir Khan into a domestic blockbuster this summer and wants Thurman, Garcia, Golovkin or Cotto, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.
