Kell Brook addresses retirement, confirms he WILL return for BIG FIGHTS

World Boxing News reported yesterday that Kell Brook was thinking long and hard about continuing in the sport.

The former welterweight world champion has now responded by stating he will return to the ring if a big fight can be made.

Speaking to his fans, Brook said: “I just wanted to address some speculation circulating about my retirement.

“I’m not sure where these reports surfaced from but I have NOT retired.

“I’ve had some time away from the ring, But me and my team have been proactively looking to secure them big fights,” he added.

WBN would like to point out that at no stage in our article on Monday did we state Brook had retired. Merely that the Sheffield man was ‘contemplating’ it.

Judging by the rest of Brook’s statement, it seems like it would be tough for ‘The Special One’ to return for anything less than a massive offering.

“We went to New York because we want to fight Crawford. These are the level of fights which get me excited.

“I’d only ever want to bow out on a high, putting on an exciting show for my fans, who have always shown me incredible support.

“If these BIG fights can be made, then I’d like nothing more than to dance again under those bright lights.

“So unless and until you hear it from me, know that there are a few more special nights in store for you guys.”

Again, WBN did not say Brook had retired. It’s understood Brook has been mulling over his future after a fight with Amir Khan fell through and talks with Crawford stalled.

But it could be as late as November or December before Brook even steps into a ring again, that’s if it happens at all.

REPORT

As previously reported: Brook has fought just two bouts in the last two years. Prior to that, ‘The Special One’ had suffered broken orbital bones on either side of his face in successive losses.

Gennadiy Golovkin and Errol Spence did considerable damage to Brook in those defeats.

Brook had been hoping to entice Amir Khan for one last payday. But when Khan announced a fight in Saudi Arabia in July, Brook was once again left in the shade.

A world title fight with Crawford has so far failed to materialize despite two months of opportunities to negotiate.

Growing frustrated, Brook is now staring into the possibility he’s fought his last fight.

A win over Michael Zerafa remains the only encounter on Brook’s record in the last fifteen months.

If we have seen the last of Brook, it will be a complete shame that he wasn’t able to capitalize on the realization of his dream in 2014.
