Callum Smith has admitted his first fight since becoming the most feared 168-lb fighter on the planet went according to plan as he eyes a Canelo bout.
‘Mundo’ produced a ruthless performance at Madison Square Garden as he demolished former world champion Hassan N’dam inside three rounds, which included three knockdowns along the way.
After retaining his WBA Super and Ring super-middleweight titles, the Joe Gallagher fighter called out Mexican superstar Alvarez, who had previously confirmed his interest in taking on the Liverpudlian at some point in his career.
Despite being the underdog with many online bookmakers like Indiana Sports Betting and more, Gallagher and Smith want the biggest fight available.
Speaking about the possibility of fighting Canelo, Smith said: “I think my audition went well. Canelo is a special fighter. I will have to wait to see what he will do in September (when he returns to the ring).
“If not September than see what he wants to do in May.
“He hasn’t said he is moving up to 168 yet but I believe I am the best fighter in the world at 168 so I am open to the challenge. But I don’t want to keep waiting for the fight that might never happen, I want to keep fighting great champions in the meantime and stay busy.
“There’s a lot of good fighters at 168 with or without Canelo so I want to text myself against them. If Canelo steps up in the future than it will happen.”
While Golden Boy is yet to decide who Canelo’s next opponent will be for September, there’s certainly not a shortage of fighters to pick from.
Smith would certainly tick the boxes as Golden Boy eye a showdown in the UK for boxing’s biggest star.

However, Gennadiy Golovkin is also a consideration to meet Canelo with DAZN desperate to make the trilogy.
Fresh off his knockout performance against Steve Rolls, GGG wants to gain revenge and has unfinished business with Canelo after two controversial scorecards denied him victories in 2017 and 2018.
Another name in the reckoning is Sergey Kovalev, although the WBO have demanded he begins negotiations with mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde. However, if Kovelev can retain his world title going into 2020 then it could whet the appetite of Canelo, who is open to fighting at 175-lbs.
