World Boxing News has been informed of an error by the International Boxing Federation in the ordering of a mandatory defense of the middleweight title in possession of Canelo Alvarez.
The IBF recently stipulated Serhiy Derevyanchenko as the next in line. Also giving the Mexican superstar a deadline to face the Russian.
In an exclusive statement to WBN, the IBF has outlined a mistake on their part.
“The letter notifying Saul Alvarez of his mandatory was sent in error too soon,” and IBF spokesperson exclusively told World Boxing News.
“Sergey Derevyanchenko is his mandatory. However, since he is a unified champion there is a rotation. Alvarez also has the right to request an exception,” they added.
The champ can now potentially plow on with plans to further unify the division against Demetrius Andrade. Or secure an expected trilogy against Gennady Golovkin.
Canelo finally became what promoter Oscar De La Hoya has labelled him for some time earlier this month. The two-weight world title holder claimed the pound for pound top spot in the World Boxing News rankings.
Overtaking Vasyl Lomachenko, Canelo made it to the summit of the WBN P4P Top 50 for the first time in his career.
It’s been some ride for the 28 year-old. Canelo scored victory number 52 of a remarkable career against Daniel Jacobs in Las Vegas on May 4.
Canelo picked up a sixth world title belt in the process, having unified a trio of straps in one weight class. Further adding to his current status a three-division champion.
The Golden Boy and DAZN star undeniably deserves the opportunity to lead the way. He’s proven his credentials time and again following a solitary loss to Floyd Mayweather.
Learning from the reverse, Canelo has come on leaps and bounds since 2013. During the Jacobs triumph, Canelo displayed unprecedented defensive skills unseen over 147 pounds at the top level since the ‘Money’ man retired.
