EXCLUSIVE: Road warrior Carson Jones to return after extended break

Super-welterweight puncher Carson Jones is on the comeback trail after a disappointing 2018 for the American.

Jones, who seems to have been around far longer than his 32 years, has lost his last fought straight since a further spell out of action between 2016 and 2017.

One of those losses and the one which began the rot was a highly controversial points reverse to ex-champ Antonio Margarito.

Upon viewing, the general consensus was Jones did enough to defeat Margarito only to be robbed on the scorecards after seven rounds.

Margarito suffered a cut which had led to an early ending in Chihuahua.

Prior to that, Jones was on call for Eddie Hearn in the UK as the Oklahoma native fought six times on British soil in four years.

Refreshed and re-energized, Jones informed WBN he’s ready to get back on the horse this month.

“I had to take some time and get things together outside of the ring,” Jones exclusively explained to World Boxing News. “I was out for like a year but I’m hoping to return mid-May.

“After that, we have a few different things in the works.

“There’s a small hold up on locking in my comeback fight. We have a possible date but we are just looking for an opponent.”

Asked about his current training conditions after a spell with renowned coach Abel Sanchez, Jones replied: “I’m not with Abel anymore. I still talk to him every now and then, though.

“We are friends, but just in a different place. Obviously, I’m a different position than I used to be as far as boxing’s concerned.”

SUPER-WELTERWEIGHT

Weight-wise, Jones will be initially back at 154. As always, Jones is open to fighting at welterweight.

“When I return that’s what I’ll be fighting at (154 pounds). I think I may attempt to get to 147. If I can good, but if not that’s fine too.

“I’m just hoping to get back in the ratings and position myself for a bigger fight in 2019,” he concluded.

Boasting 40 wins and 30 knockouts, Jones is a seasoned road warrior who would be a test for any up and comer at either weight.

Back in 2012, Jones gave Kell Brook the shock of his life and almost took his undefeated run.

Seven years on, the rugged fighter is plotting to shake things up once more.
