John Ryder on Gennady Golovkin list for June, Maciej Sulecki confusion

World Boxing News understands that WBA mandatory challenger John Ryder is on the shortlist to face Gennady Golovkin in June.

Originally, Brandon Adams had agreed to face Golovkin until an offer to battle Jermall Charlo found more favor. An official decision hasn’t been made yet, but it’s expected that Adams will fight Charlo in the coming months.

This left Golovkin back to the drawing board for a warm-up opponent for Canelo. WBN has received word that Ryder is a possibility for the summer bout.

Golovkin is set to share the limelight with WBO champion Demetrius Andrade for what will be a double-header on DAZN.

Both could find themselves without an opponent, though, after confusion surrounded Maciej Sulecki.

As WBN reported last month, Sulecki was due to challenge Andrade for the world title belt. That was before reports of an injury to Sulecki filtered through this week.

Sulecki has since denied the ailment would force him out of the Andrade encounter, leading to the fight being up in the air.

If Sulecki is out, that leaves both Andrade and Golovkin without firm opponents, although it’s not likely they will face each other.

‘GGG’ cannot afford too much of a risk before the mega-money trilogy fight with Canelo. Andrade is a top member of the ‘Who Needs Him Club’.

At this point, time is running out on the June 8 target for the event, with June 15 and 22 now said to be alternatives for Golovkin and Andrade.

LEMIEUX

There’s also a chance the duo could now be split up after the pair of clashes faced interruption.

More will be revealed soon as Briton Ryder awaits news of his fate. Ryder is current number one challenger to Callum Smith or Canelo, both of whom hold versions of WBA title.

‘The Gorilla’ has already been ruled out for Callum Smith by coach Joe Gallagher. But has been put forward as a potential opponent for David Lemieux also.

If Golovkin chooses another, it’s expected Ryder will trade blows with the big-punching French-Canadian next.
