Former IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook has claimed he was on his way to victory over Errol Spence before being stopped.
Despite being down on all three scorecards, and with the vast majority of media at ringside, Brook says he was on his way to defeating the American.
Upon witnessing Spence completely dominate the smaller Mikey Garcia at the weekend, ‘The Special One’ gave his reaction.
“I believe he dominated the fight. That fight is still there,” Brook told Sky Sports. “He still mentions my name. He still would like to fight me, because he knows I was beating him.
“The people around me know what my training camp was like for that fight. They know I was far from 100 percent. I was beating him, and the eye went. I would love that fight again.
“A 100 percent me, beats Errol Spence, and he’s one of the biggest names in boxing. I think those fights are still there to be made.”
Brook was halted in the eleventh after excessive blinking and turning away from Spence. Since then, the Sheffield man has won only two lower-key affairs.
Wins over Sergey Rabchenko and Michael Zerafa have led Brook to a spot on the undercard of Anthony Joshua v Jarrell Miller on June 1.
Fighting at the world-famous Madison Square Garden beckons for Brook, who is ready to rumble after just one fight in twelve months.
“I’m brand new, I’m ready for those massive fights. I’ve got plenty more to give for the fans. I’m excited about these big fights,” he concluded.
VARGAS
Opponents are being bandied around for Brook, although it’s likely another lesser affair will come to fruition this summer.
Jesse Vargas had been mentioned as a potential foe before he was pitted against Humberto Soto on April 26.
Whoever is in the opposite corner, Brook will certainly be hoping a win leads to a huge fight later in the year.
The likes of Tony Harrison and Brian Castano will firmly be on the 154 pound radar in 2019. Whilst a rematch with Spence or indeed Shawn Porter, would be options at welterweight.
Since suffering serious facial injuries to Gennady Golovkin and then Spence, Brook is yet to formally step-up to world-class level.
Vargas would be a good test, and a potential banana skin for Brook, although is a world away from a UK fight with Amir Khan.
