‘Canelo vs Jacobs winner will be the best at 160 pounds’

Golden Boy Promotions boss Oscar De La Hoya sees the forthcoming Cinco de Mayo clash between Canelo Alvarez and Danny Jacobs as a battle for the top spot at middleweight.

De La Hoya, through taking Canelo and his company to DAZN, set up a massive unification clash with Jacobs.

Fresh from victories over Gennady Golovkin and Rocky Fielding, Canelo is in good shape. Jacobs, on the other hand, was pushed hard by Sergey Derevyanchenko.

Jacobs won a wafer-thin decision over the tough puncher last October.

Despite that fact, De La Hoya firmly sees Canelo and Jacobs as the one and two in the division.

Canelo vs Jacobs

“This fight is important because it will feature two world champions who will unify their titles to demonstrate who is the best at 160 pounds,” said De La Hoya.

“This battle is also significant because it features two of the most resilient fighters in the history of the sport.

“The best part about this event is it will be streamed live on DAZN. With DAZN, you can watch anytime, anywhere.

“Together with DAZN, we’re committed to making boxing more accessible and affordable for all fans, without the price of pay-per-view.”

“May 4 will be a historic night for Golden Boy and we expect a great performance by our champion Canelo as he delivers a great victory,” he added.

GGG

Recently joining DAZN himself, Golovkin will be an interested spectator on fight night. Even if Jacobs pulls off a shock, Golovkin is known to only have eyes for Canelo.

The chance to avenge a draw (when he clearly won) and a rematch loss (in a debated decision) have proven too strong and GGG wants only Canelo no matter the result.

A third fight should take place in September, meaning all three fights have avoided the Cinco de Mayo festivities.

The pair were due to fight on May 5th, 2018 until Canelo tested positive and was subsequently banned.

Returning four months later, Canelo took Golovkin’s belts and now the Kazakh wants them back.
