Gennady Golovkin next move almost finalized, spring return on the cards

Gennady Golovkin is set to sign a multi-million dollar deal with DAZN as the Kazakh puncher builds towards a rematch with Canelo Alvarez.

WBN understands Golovkin has agreed to a contract in principle with the streaming giant. A two-bout arrangement worth eight figures is in the offing.

Details are sketchy until the formal announcement gets made next week. But it’s thought Golovkin will not be signing with Golden Boy or Matchroom Boxing.

It’s more likely Golovkin will use his banner for the duration of a DAZN stint, promoting shows as GGG Promotions or GGG Boxing.

Tom Loeffler remains involved with the former middleweight king despite reports the pair severed ties.

Recently, trainer Abel Sanchez spoke to World Boxing News to confirm the decision surrounding Golovkin’s future would solely be by making the man himself.

“GGG is on vacation from boxing. He values his private time. His decision will come once he has evaluated the best option for his career, family, and for the sport of boxing,” said Sanchez.

“GGG has had a great Hall Of Fame career. His accomplishments and records will stand on their own. He has nothing else to prove to anyone so that GGG will determine his future.”

A WBC order to face Jermall Charlo was put out into the public domain, although Sanchez said the fight wasn’t a priority.

“What’s in GGG’s best interest is the main focus. Nobody or no Organization will determine who GGG will fight.

“When he decides the direction, he will decide whom he fights.

“Once GGG does decide and issues a press release, that will have a definitive answer,” he added.

WBO

WBN believes Golovkin is lining up a May return. But any notion of a challenge against soon-to-be DAZN stablemate Demetrius Andrade would depend on the champion gaining special dispensation from WBO President Paco Valcarcel.

Billy Joe Saunders was recently made mandatory for Andrade. The pair have been given just weeks to sign a contract.

This makes Golovkin v Andrade improbable to secure. At the same time, there are few other big names to be considered at 160.

A brief move up to 168 to face Callum Smith was thought to be a real option. But as things stand, staying at middleweight makes more sense.

Rematching David Lemieux could be looked at before Golovkin meets the winner of Canelo v Danny Jacobs in September.

Maciej Sulecki and Sergiy Derevyanchenko may also be considerations. Plus, a co-feature place on the Canelo v Jacobs undercard hasn’t yet been completely ruled out.
