Oscar De La Hoya: Fears grow over promoter’s wellness

Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya continues to be the focus of speculation due to his activity on social media.

The 49-year-old eleven-time world champion has fans worried about his mental state and ongoing substance abuse battle.

Completing rehab on more than one occasion in the past, De La Hoya could be an announcement away from another stint, according to those fearing for his condition.

Some of his posts leave more questions than answers. They began with De La Hoya stating he wanted to sell Golden Boy Promotions, the business he built from the ground up with former opponents Shane Mosley and Bernard Hopkins.

“I’ve made a decision about selling Golden Boy,” revealed De La Hoya.

“Mark my words, I will become the first Hispanic athlete to become a Billionaire. Congratulations, Tiger, Lebron, and Jordan,” he added on the recent news confirmation of all three going into an exclusive club.

In another, De La Hoya mentioned his previous battles as he faced trolling over his timeline.

“I overcome depression and mental health three times over by doing what I love in the ring. I win eleven titles in six weight divisions. But I almost lose my life because of wrong choices.

“Stop talking s***, and please use me as an example to motivate yourself and tell yourself, ‘I am worth it.'”

The most concerning came in response to Ring Magazine Editor-in-Chief Doug Fischer.

Fischer commented on the Boxing Hall of Fame induction when De La Hoya responded.

“Sugar Shane Mosley, the first pro fighter I really covered closely, and the subject of my first major feature story published in The Ring 25 years ago, spoke from the heart just like he fought. So happy to see him inducted,” said Fischer.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA QUESTION

De La Hoya wrote back with a head-scratching comment.

“Good question,” he said.

Fans immediately began asking the obvious.

“Oscar, please help me find the question here,” said one. Another added: “You okay, Oscar?”

A third stated: “You are a menace, and it’s hilarious.”

Hopefully, De La Hoya will be able to get the help he needs, if indeed that is the case. If he is fine, it could be a case of giving his trolls a taste of their own medicine.

Soon enough, we will know the answer.
