Floyd Mayweather facing YouTubers gets the predicted response

Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, and other past and present champions are considered legends – and rightly so. But it seems to pit them against YouTubers is a step too far.

Mayweather was due to share the ring with a vlogger who out-weighed him by fifty pounds in weight when approaching his 44th birthday.

It turns out that the demand to witness it just wasn’t there.

Despite releasing a statement confirming the ‘special exhibition’ postponement, WBN understands that it’s more likely to be scrapped for the foreseeable future.

Fanmio boss Solomon Engel revealed his hope to reschedule. Still, with Mayweather wanting the event to top his world-record-breaking Pay Per View feat against Pacquiao in 2015, the chances were remote at best.

Engel, outlining his thoughts, said: “After an absolutely tremendous response to the fight announcement, we’re hoping to announce a new date very soon along with some new exciting details.”

The simple translation of this could be a whole new show with a new opponent for Mayweather.

Floyd Mayweather 50

At 50-0 inside the ring and with two of his last three US-based events topping over four million PPV sales, it’s unlikely Mayweather would be willing to risk his reputation unless totally sure of enormous success.

Riding on social media followers’ coat-tails is never any guarantee of that, especially amid a pandemic.

Who knows if they will ever be able to get it done. But Mayweather facing a fellow-boxing Hall of Famer would be much more likely to be received with open arms.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER HALL OF FAME

Speaking of Hall of Famers, Mayweather’s first-ballot induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame is off until 2022.

Mayweather was due to receive his nod this year, alongside the als0-delayed class of 2020. The presentation has been put back a further year due to Covid-19.

Receiving the honor back in December, Mayweather was delighted to claim a place on the honor roll at the first time of asking.

“I’ve been waiting for this call for most of my life. It finally came. I’m a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

“God has been good to me. I can finally rest now. This chapter of my life is complete.”

Winning the WBN Fighter of the Decade Award in 2020, World Boxing News still hopes to get the trophy into Mayweather’s hands at some point this year.

Andre Ward, Wladimir Klitschko, Laila Ali, and Anne Wolfe are also part of 2021’s class.
