Stephen Fulton remained undefeated in sensational fashion on the undercard of Julian Williams triumphant win over Jarrett Hurd, and like Williams become world champion, defeating 3-time world champion Paulus Ambunda via unanimous decision.
‘Cool Boy Steph’ looked flawless on the night, sending the then Namibian champion to the canvas in what turned out to be a shutout victory for the American challenger. Fulton gave his assessment on his world title-winning effort.
The Super Bantamweight said, “Ambunda showed why he was a 3-time world champion, he got up when I put him down in the fight and came to fight. I was very happy with my performance and I displayed I have got power and I know that I have power.
“I showed I am a world level fighter with my performance and I know I am only getting better with every fight and I want to thank my team and the IBO for giving me the opportunity to show my talent off and become world champion in the process.”
The Super Bantamweight division is a reignited division, with a recent classic, put on between Daniel Roman and TJ Doheny, and Fulton inserts himself at the top of the 122-pound weight class. The new IBO Champion discussed what he wants going forward in 2019.
The Philadelphia native added, “I want to be active firstly are foremost. I want to box at least another 3 times this year and defend my title. I’ll leave it up to the team to make the decisions on when I fight but I will fight anyone.
“Ideally, I want to fight someone with a belt next. I am telling you now I will beat Daniel Roman. He is on my radar and my goal is to become a unified champion so I would love to make that fight happen.
Fulton continued, “If the Rigondeaux fight made business sense I would fight him no problem at all. I want all the belts and to fight real fights and show I am the best in the division and to do that you’ve got to become a unified champion and beat the best, so bring it on.”
Ed Levine, who has steered the International Boxing Organisation for almost 30 years, gave his assessment on Fulton’s victory.
“Stephen Fulton produced a fantastic performance. We are delighted to have him as our super bantamweight champion.
“Fulton is a fighter on the rise and a fighter who will establish himself as an elite fighter in the super bantamweight and featherweight weight classes for years to come.
“The IBO works hard to provide opportunities for fighters like Stephen to showcase their skills and establish themselves as elite talents.”
