Michael Hunter breaks silence on being favorite to land Anthony Joshua

Cruiserweight-come-heavyweight contender Michael Hunter has spoken out as speculation continues regarding a fight with Anthony Joshua.

Several factors have put American Hunter as the favorite to replace Jarrell Miller. ‘Big Baby’ recently failed a drugs test with the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency.

Hunter was snapped up by Matchroom only a few weeks ago on the back of two standout performances. Plus, he’s American into the bargain – one of Eddie Hearn’s main criteria.

Stopping both Martin Bakole and Alexander Ustinov, Hunter has established himself as a dangerman in the division.

The double triumph made it four victories on the spin for the 30 year-old since suffering his only career loss to Oleksandr Usyk at 200 pounds.

After being named on Hearn’s five-man shortlist for Joshua, Hunter has since emerged as the only available contender.

Addressing this fact, Hunter made an appearance on Love Sport Radio to discuss stepping in on June 1.

“I like the sound of [the AJ fight]. It’s heavyweight boxing so any time you get to that weight class. Everybody has dynamite in their hands,” Hunter told Love Sport Radio.

“I’ve been training all my life for fights like this so I would not miss the chance to fight Anthony Joshua.

“I respect him because he’s won a gold medal, he’s done amazing things in the pro game and he’s big and strong. He has a lot of people behind him.

“He’s a great fighter and he has accomplished a lot of things. The things that people do say about him is that he is a little green in certain areas and he is still learning.

“But he is always willing to learn so that’s always a good thing. If I fight him, it’s definitely going to be a test and all the truths will come out.

“There are a handful of guys who should all be competing with each other and can make great fights happen. But I don’t think he stands out as the top one.”

Cuban ex-world title challenger Luis Ortiz is said to be considering an offer, although was ruled out by his manager due to the timeframe involved.

Hearn has been reported to be pinning his hopes on an Ortiz u-turn. But Hunter remains a strong alternative to battle AJ in New York.

Adam Kownacki has distanced himself from the fight. Whilst Mahmoud (Manuel) Charr and Agit Kabayel are further down due to a lack of US ties.

Jermaine Franklin and Trevor Bryan are other potential foes who could be approached due to them holding United States passports.
